Woke up early today without the help of the alarm. Somehow there’s like this clock inside you and you know you can’t be late today. The airplane leaves at 8. And we got to meet the teacher at 6. I check my phone and hey! The teacher sent a message. He’s up so early huh? It’s a Sunday. It’s Easter! Kind of sad that I couldn’t go to church today. ):
Last night, my dad brought us to eat international buffet dinner at Le Meridian Hotel. A goodbye feast? Perhaps he knew that I wasn’t going to eat properly there. It’s just that I’m too picky with my food. Which is a good and a bad thing actually. My parents and sister kept wanting me to take pictures with them. With people missing me already before I get to Guangzhou. This is so comforting and reassuring. (:
So I reached the airport and Si Si, Sharlene and Pei Hwa were there already.
When we checked in our luggage it was a shocker! Mine weights 19.8kg and the limit was 20. Si Si’s one was 20 on the dot. Sharlene’s one was like 15? What an amazing packer... Jia Wen, who was the last to arrive, her luggage, weighs 24! Wonder what she brought along. Isn’t it queer that our luggage overloads before we depart?
I wanted to eat breakie with my parents, I should have. ): But we waited with the lecturer. And then when I cleared the immigration, I saw my parents and my sister outside, waving, only a glass wall separates me from them. Gosh I sound so drama... I WILL MISS BICKERING WITH THEM ALL. T___T And my father’s lame jokes, my mom’s nagging and my annoying sister’s whining... Okay, I will just miss them.
So apparently this was the first time away from home for a long time. But it doesn’t feel like it even though I will miss my family.
The airplane was like Budget airline with more legroom and meals on board. But there was no telly as the flight was a mere 2 hours 55 minutes. It was noisy and there was slight turbulence due to the clouds. This is what being Nezha or Sun Wukong like. Too much Saiyuki, I’m sorry. Slept for a bit and woke up to eat.
They served rice with something but I didn’t bother to open. Just ate my bun with butter and the dessert- sweet potato with jelly. YUMS. Not bobo cha cha, that has coconut, this is the non-coconut version.
We touched down at 1145. Hey it’s early. Outside the window THE AIRPORT IS AMAZING. Looks so new. I didn’t expect this. When we got off the plane and walked inside the hall, I recall the New Bangkok airport which looks like this. Glass and metal.
Clearing immigration was easier than expected. Went to collect our baggage and Si Si and I found out that they wrecked our locks. Her zip with her lock attached had disappeared. The Samsonite which I borrowed from Aunty Ally the zip head’s tip broke but my lock was still there. Just that I can’t lock it anymore. Rats. WHO DID THIS? You have rotten fingers!
I spy... HEY THEY HAVE MACS IN THE AIRPORT! Ahaha.... But it’s not like I like Macs. So we found the guy with the placard holding Sharlene’s, Si Si’s and my name. Followed him and waited outside as he drove the van. We didn’t get to say a proper goodbye to Pei Hwa and Jia Wen.

The ride to the factory will take an hour. The driver told us.
Oh yes, does this look familiar?

No, it’s not Changi Airport. It’s Guangzhou’s airport control tower- I guess.
They even have palm trees! >____<
The road was so smooth we slept all the way... Cracking my eyes open occasionally to look at my surroundings. They have a Car lane, a slow land, a fast lane and an emergency lane on the expressway and it is indicated by signs. How considerate.
Love old buildings and we passed by many.
When we got to the factory in Heshan, the lift was spoilt so three kind security guards helped us carry our luggage all the way to the 6th floor. We live in room 604.

This is our room. Um part of it. Currently Sharlene sleeps on the sofa. ~___~ Feel bad, I told her to let me have the sofa since she’s taller she should take the bed... I sleep near the wall and Si Si sleeps near the door to the balcony.

Please excuse the blurriness; I must have been really excited. That is the door to our room and on the right is the toilet and on the left is our cupboard.
This is the view from our balcony. Our room faces another factory’s dorm and between us is a giant plot of land which is under construction...
We were introduced by the guard to the girl living in Room 601. Her name is Jing Pei. She’s a mass communication student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and she’s here with her friend Gib who’s a resident at 606. They are going to be here for 5 months and they arrived a week ago. Jing Pei’s room is filled with junk food. She can’t get used to the food here and says they serve a lot of veggies. Does this mean that I won’t get used to it? >____< Not much of a veggie person. The only vegs I eat are broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, corn, melons, some leafy vegs in the soup (watercress, spinach) that’s about it. Not counting mushrooms since they are fungi.
Mr. KK Leung is bringing us to do some grocery shopping. He contacted Jing Pei. And Sharlene made a list. We need toilet paper. And a kettle cos there isn’t one to boil water. This is going to sound weird but we had to get pillows cos it isn’t hygienic to use the ones in the room.
The supermarket is big, like Giant or Carrefour sells almost everything.
The supermarket is in this building. The heart of town.

Our groceries.... Scary innit?
After grabbing our necessities, Mr KK treated us to Macs! YES I ATE MACS, SHERYL. Had a chocolate sundae. Sharlene had a vanilla cone which she forgot that she took it (yes how? It’s amazing) and the guy gave Mr. KK an extra cone. Si Si had a fillet o fish. Taste different, she says.

YES, THE HAVE MACS! Does this shock you?

Happy Meal collectibles seem to be the cups with the Olympic 2008 mascots on them.
We left without Gib, so Mr. KK bought him his spicy nuggets! Mm... wanted to eat it but I have this ulcer on my upper lip...
Meet at 6 for dinner. Mr KK is bringing us, Jing Pei and Gip and SUPRISE! Our mystery neighbour in 604- Charles, a Taiwanes with a US citizenship who’s going to be here for a YEAR. (He, according to Gib, has contacts so...)
We went to this local restaurant for dinner. Somewhat like steamboat minus the soup. Instead it’s a giant pot of porridge and you cook the meat and stuff inside the boiling pot.

That’s where we ate.

That’s the story behind the cuisine. I’m not going to embarrass myself by explaining it so I took a picture.
Guess what’s for appetizers?

Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Are you thinking what I’m thinking? DUH THEY ARE WORMS. (Just the brown things...)
Worm salad. A delicacy and a novelty- to me.

I actually ATE it! ^___^ YAY! I am a trooper! GROSS, you must be thinking. I ate 4 worms! Mr. KK kept denying that there were worms so Jing Pei won’t feel so disgusted. ^o^
Had fresh prawns, pork, noodles, rice and had some beer. Didn’t drink much, not too found of it. We were joint halfway by Kenneth, our supervisor and another guy but I forgot his name ^__^;; opps.
Kenneth suggested to go to a KTV after our meal. Being somewhat of a person who loves to experience things, I decided to go along. The boys opted out and Sharlene, Jing Pei, Si Si and I went. Wen Hua Club. It’s part of a hotel.
Really posh! We had girls welcoming us and they aren’t those stereotypical scantily clad girls. They wore some gown costume. And they aren’t heavily made-up. To summarise it, the place is no sleazy joint.
We had a room to ourselves and there was a flat screen telly! 3 longue sofas. And then...
They served us two large platters of fruits! I didn’t take a picture though. What a variety. Starfruit. Dragonfruit. Pear. Apple. Plum. Cherry Tomato etc. Some light appetizers- NO, NOT WORMS. Spicy squid, hot French fries and the usual nuts- garlic flavoured cashews.

Wait- I DO have a picture of the nice snacks! See the fruits platter? WOW right? I mean we ate quite a bit before I took that picture and it was much more magnificent. And the brown things are NOT WORMS. They are chicken wings, well part of chicken wings.
This is going to be sooo unprofessional, redundant, and irrelevant- but the colleagues taught us to play drinking games! Russian Roulette, Bluff which I haven’t mastered lost and drank a couple. Really fun! Think Chow Yun Fatt as God of Gamblers... Except I am a total amateur at gambling and I have about the worst luck in the world...
I think it was in Russian Roulette? Where I kept rolling the dice to 7 like 4-5 times and the people who had 7 on their table had to drink tons because of me. MY BAD! Gosh. Then the run ended when I rolled my own number. -___-;
Didn’t stay for too long as it was a working day tomorrow. We went back at 10, showered and had a good night’s rest. ^___^ Do not underestimate the power or sleep. It does wonders. Since I’m still sleep deprived...
